Family-Owned Farm
Owned by third generation coffee farmer Cristina de Gonzales, Finca el Valle benefits from high altitude and rich soils provided by three volcanoes that punctuate the landscape and occasionally dust the terrain with fine volcanic ash. Coffee thrives here in the relatively dry climate, blessed by days of bright sunshine and refreshingly cool evenings.
Birds Enjoy The Shaded Environment
Like her mother before her, Cristina insists on growing only the bourbon coffee variety, preferred for its intense and vibrant flavor in the cup. Bourbon plants are particularly well suited to the Antigua region, but require protection from the intense tropical heat and evening chill so common at high altitudes. Relief comes in the form of a legion of Grevalias trees, which create an umbrella-like canopy providing dappled shade during the day while holding in radiant heat at night. Finca el Valle is a popular sanctuary for warblers, vireos, Western Tanager, Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks, Tropical Pewee and other species of birds, who make their homes among the tree tops. Like many farms that incorporate shade trees, Finca el Valle enjoys a balanced ecology and does not rely on pesticides, herbicides or fungicides.
